Do we need supplements?

What supplements do you use? What are the benefits?

I currently use an electrolyte in the form of a tablet that can be dissolved in water (from Amazon/SIS Hydro lemon flavour) and the My Vitamins - Collagen/ protein powder - Vimto flavour.

...but why?

Electrolytes

Electrolytes are made up of: Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, magnesium, calcium and phosphate.

What do they do?

Electrolytes support your fluid balance and hydration, muscle repair and allows your nerves to work properly.

Most people will be able to sustain enough electrolytes in their body from a nutritious and varied diet. However, if you are someone that sustains more than an hour of exercise a day you may need to look into the different types of electrolyte supplements. As you sweat, you will loose sodium. Using supplements such as the tablets or sports drinks will allow you to replace lost electrolytes.

Natural sources of electrolytes

Electrolytes can be found in both food and fluids.

Some sources include:

  • Sodium and chloride, commonly consumed as salt (sodium chloride), are prevalent in foods such as bacon, olives, prawns, cheese, pickles, and anchovies.

  • Sodium is also present in foods like bananas, apricots, spinach, and potatoes, as well as in meat, fish, and cereals.

  • Excellent sources of calcium include milk (and fortified milk alternatives), cheese, curly kale, and bread made with fortified flour. Phosphate is available in dairy products, meats, fish, nuts, and beans.

  • Sources of magnesium encompass nuts, leafy greens, whole grains, and dried beans.

Electrolyte imbalance - either too high or too low

Signs of an electrolyte imbalance include:

  • cramping and muscle weakness

  • migraines/headaches

  • Confusion/uncertainty

  • abnormal heart rhythm

  • feeling unwell/ sick

Collagen

What is it?

Collagen is a protein that your body makes - it's a key part in your bone, skin and muscles. It allows for repair and to improve skin and support other areas such as joint pain.

Why should we consider supplements?

However, as you age your body struggles to produce enough collagen as existing collagen breaks down. This is where collagen supplements can support this renewal. Most of these supplements have already had the collagen broken down, which makes it easier for your body to absorb.
